About us

Urban Green Council is a nonprofit dedicated to decarbonizing buildings for healthy and resilient communities.

Climate change is the critical issue facing the world today. We focus on efforts to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, which in New York City consume 95 percent of electricity, use 80 percent of water, and account for more than two-thirds of total carbon emissions. As we improve building sustainability, we can deliver a more resilient, efficient and healthy future.

Established in 2002, we are funded by contributions from foundations, members and corporate sponsors. Our in-house experts and a dedicated network of volunteers are helping to transform the built environment in New York City with models that can be replicated in urban centers worldwide.

Education is one of our key strategies to advance Urban Green’s mission. We train people who design, construct and operate buildings locally and nationally. Urban Green Council has trained over 50,000 building professionals on the latest developments and best practices for designing, building and maintaining sustainable buildings.

On Urban Green Learn, we offer a suite of on-demand courses covering topics such as NYC’s Local Law 97, construction waste management, energy code inspections, systems commissioning and more. This portal is regularly updated with new, cutting edge content.

Beyond this platform, Urban Green also offers comprehensive educational opportunities across a range of formats:

  • Live public programs featuring industry speakers
  • Energy code training taught by experienced instructors
  • Green Professional (GPRO) training with a certificate exam
  • Recorded programs that can be found in our resource library
